You only get one Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) debut!
And only one athlete debuted on “Fight Island” last night (Sat., July 27, 2025) at UFC Abu Dhabi inside Etihad Arena in the United Arab Emirates, and it was a big one, but it did not go so well.
UFC Abu Dhabi’s rookie lost, and now that the dust has settled, let’s grade his performance below:

Marcus Buchecha
Marcus Buchecha, a 17-time Brazilian jiu-jitsu world champion, had a golden opportunity to shake up the UFC’s garbage Heavyweight division and cement himself as an instant contender given his credentials, but that all went out the window as he lost a unanimous decision to No. 13-ranked Martin Buday, who improved to an impressive 7-1 inside the Octagon.
Buday proved he was the superior fighter Saturday night, showcasing airtight takedown defense. He stuffed 10 of Buchecha’s 11 takedown attempts while peppering the Brazilian with crisp jabs and straight rights that kept Buchecha on the back foot.
Buchecha finally scored his lone takedown in the second round, and his elite grappling pedigree was on display. He unleashed ground-and-pound and hunted for submissions, briefly securing Buday’s back with both hooks in and landing heavy shots. But he couldn’t seal the deal, and when Buday reversed the position, it felt like Buchecha’s will was broken.
It’s evident Buchecha has put work into his striking—boxing, knees, and kicks—but let’s be real: his stand-up game is still lackluster. And let’s be honest, there are plenty of low-level Heavyweights that would tune him up on the feet.
At 35 years old (young for a heavyweight, sure), Buchecha’s UFC future looks bleak after this debut, and I don’t see Buchecha having much success inside the Octagon. I’ll admit, I was optimistic about his debut, but as of now, he’s been a significant disappointment.
He’ll probably beat low-tier heavyweights like Justin Tafa or Thomas Petersen, but an unranked Valter Walker or Vitor Petrino would likely have his number.
