Welcome to Midnight Mania!
Let’s start the night off by taking look back over the three biggest stories of Thursday, May 1, 2025.
- Dan Argueta retires after six fights in the Octagon: If you haven’t seen it, Argueta vs. Turcios was an absolute banger, and a re-watch would be a worthy show of respect.
- Bo Nickal vs. Reinier de Ridder preview, prediction: Sadly, the heart and the brain are separate on my prediction here. De Ridder will have openings, but I’m guessing he’s too awkward to take advantage.
- Fans really want de Ridder to win though: It’s genuinely wild how unanimously the MMA community has sided against one of the sport’s best prospects. Fighters have done much worse and been rewarded with far less hate, but also … I get it.

Imagine being a One Championship investor and learning your money went towards THIS.
This is one of the craziest stats/facts in recent memory.
Jeremy Stephens made his UFC debut when Chuck Liddell was still the light heavyweight champion. #UFCDesMoines

WEC FOREVER!
There are only four fighters from WEC that are still active in the UFC today. Poirier and Aldo are the only two that are currently ranked and Dustin is still in the top-5

Deiveson Figueiredo really does have a lot of cool tricks and setups to his game.
Figgy is cool because he’ll do literally nothing for 30 seconds and then when he does throw it’s some of the coolest shit you’ve ever seen pic.twitter.com/b5vws2AjoL

The gorilla vs. man discourse is never going to end until it happens. Surely, some random country with questionable ethics can make it happen?
Never forget amidst all this “UFC has no stars” talk, the promotion has utterly failed to promote Tom Aspinall like he deserves.

This is probably the greatest amateur knockout I’ve seen — the fist bump is deserved.
Non-punching hand was a little too low …

Random Land
This movie trailer reminded me of Stephen King in the best way.
The first trailer for Zach Cregger’s ‘WEAPONS’ has been released.
The film follows a classroom of children who get out of their beds and disappear one night without a trace.
