Neil Magny defied the odds yet again to capture a comeback submission win over fellow welterweight veteran Jake Matthews earlier tonight (Sat., Sept. 27, 2025) at UFC Perth LIVE on ESPN+ from inside RAC Arena in Perth, Australia.
Per usual, Magny was a sizeable betting underdog heading into Saturday’s contest. Matthews was riding a three-fight win streak and coming off a submission victory over Chidi Njokuani. Magny was coming off a win of his own, but the veteran was still just 5-5 in his last 10 Octagon appearances ahead of UFC Perth.
The first round was a nice back-and-forth battle, but it was Matthews who grabbed a hold of a tight guillotine choke along the fence. Magny seemed to have the situation under control as he moved into side control for a brief breather, but he never actually cleared Matthews’ hands. Matthews kept the submission going and it looked he had choked Magny out. The referee rushed in to break it up right before the bell.
It appeared a submission finish for Matthews was in order, but the official instead declared an end to the round and clarified that the fight was still proceeding. The Australian crowd was not happy.
Matthews did more damage in the second round and almost submitted Magny with a triangle choke, but the veteran once again defended and wiggled free. Magny somehow turned the tides in the third round and overwhelmed Matthews with punches and eventually takedowns. This allowed Magny the chance to lock up a nasty D’Arce choke and force Matthews to tap. It was a sensational comeback performance and a win that gives Magny his first UFC win streak in nearly four years.
