Following her dominant win over Amanda Lemos in the co-main event of UFC Fight Night: Emmett vs. Vallejos, Gillian Robertson is gunning for a title shot.
Robertson used her superior grappling skills to take Lemos down and keep her there, and while the Canadian submission specialist wasn’t able to score a finish, the victory put her on a five fight winning streak, which is longer than any of the other top contenders at women’s strawweight.
That’s enough, Robertson argued, to earn her dibs on the 115 pound champion Mackenzie Dern.
“That’s five wins in a row,” Robertson said in the cage following the win. “I’ve got the most finishes out of any woman, the most submissions out of any woman. All I need is that belt to solidify myself.”
“I think it’s the only thing that makes sense,” she added at the post-fight press conference. “Five wins in a row, most submissions, most finishes. I think that I deserve that spot. The only thing that would really solidify me anymore is that belt.”
The only thing standing in Robertson’s way is the potential return of former strawweight champ Zhang Weili. Weili lost a tough one-sided title fight against women’s flyweight champ Valentina Shevchenko, getting blanked on the scorecards by “Bullet.” While logic would dictate that Zhang would return to her former division, she has been reticent to confirm anything about her future.
With the UFC’s matchmaking these days, even a five fight streak won’t lock a less popular fighter into a title shot if Weili decides to move back down. Especially when that last win is a decision.
