One of the greatest boxers of this generation has announced his retirement, as Vasiliy Lomachenko has revealed he will be walking away from the sport at the age of 37 following a 13-year run as a professional.
“I’m grateful for every victory and every defeat, both in the ring and in life,” Lomachenko said on social media. “I’m thankful that, as my career comes to an end, I’ve gained clarity about the direction a person must take in order to achieve true victory, not just in the ring.”
“Loma” collected a record of 18-3 as a pro with 12 knockouts. Of his 21 pro bouts, 19 of them were championship affairs. Along the way, The Ukrainian-born pugilist won titles in three divisions, including winning the WBO Featherweight and Lightweight, WBA Super Lightweight, WBC, IBF and The Ring Lightweight, and the WBO international Featherweight and intercontinental Lightweight titles.
He has big wins over Guillermo Rigondeaux, Jorge Linares and Luke Campbell, with his last win coming against George Kambosos Jr., whom he defeated via eleventh-round technical knockout (TKO) in May 2024 to win the IBO and vacant IBF straps.
His last two defeats came against Teofimo Lopez in Oct. 2020, and then against current WBC Super Lightweight champion, Devin Haney, in May 2023, a fight many felt should have gone Lomachenko’s way. Prior to going pro, Lomachenko won Olympic gold medals for Ukraine at the 2008 Beijing and 2012 London Olympics and amasses a staggering 396-1 mark as an amateur.
