Diego Lopes came up short to become Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Featherweight champion last night (Sat., April 12, 2025) inside Kaseya Center in Miami, Fla., losing a five-round unanimous decision in UFC 314’s main event against Alexander Volkanovski (watch highlights).
After reflecting on the defeat, Lopes shared a statement on Instagram today:
“Always with my head held high, a smile on my face. I fell short last night, I failed in a few ways. I’ll get back to work, improve, correct the mistakes, and move forward. Thank you all for your support. As I always say, “NOTHING HAPPENS.”
Accompanying the post was a photo of supporters gathered in his Brazilian childhood neighborhood to cheer him on.
“There are things in life that are priceless; one of those things happened exactly last night, to see all the people from the neighborhood I was born and raised in together to see my struggle and something without explanation,” Lopes wrote.
Lopes (26-7) saw his five-fight win streak end, but his gutsy performance against “The Great” showed he belongs among the elite.
To climb back to a title shot, a heated grudge match with Yair Rodriguez —who also won at UFC 314 — feels like the perfect next step.
Book it.
