Damn those judges!
Former Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Featherweight Champion Max Holloway retained his coveted ‘BMF’ title and dashed Dustin Poirier’s retirement plans with a unanimous decision victory at UFC 318 last night (Sat., July 19, 2025) inside a raucous Smoothie King Center in New Orleans, LA (watch highlights).
The trilogy bout between Holloway and Poirier lived up to the hype, with both fighters getting hurt multiple times but keeping the fight highly competitive. However, when the scores were tallied, two judges had Holloway winning four rounds to one.
Poirier admitted post-fight that the contest felt much closer in the heat of battle, a view echoed by UFC CEO Dana White at the UFC 318 post-fight press conference (watch here).
“Yeah, I mean, it was an incredible fight,” White told reporters. “I thought going into the last round, the fight was closer than the judges had it. But, yeah, I mean, it lived up to what it was supposed to be— the card did. The card was great.”

It seems Poirier and White were outliers, as most media outlets, including us, scored it 49-46 or 50-45 for Holloway across the board.
Regardless, this brawl is a shoo-in for 2025 Fight of the Year contention and will be remembered as a defining chapter in both fighters’ legacies.
