Conor McGregor has formally declared his intention to run for president of Ireland. Now, he just needs your help changing the Irish constitution to do it.
McGregor has been talking about running for president since visiting Donald Trump in the White House this past St. Patrick’s Day. He immediately came out and demanded the Irish government “dismantle Ireland’s human trafficking racket” and “mass deport radicalized imports,” or there’d be consequences.
“Save Ireland, or my direct plan of action that Ireland and America wishes to see implemented will come in on White House paper attached with my signature,” he claimed. Months later, and there’s been no such paper. The Trump administration seems to have bigger fish to fry, leaving McGregor on his own to overhaul Ireland.
The only problem? As MMAmania has noted, anyone who wants to be on the ballot for president of Ireland needs at least a tiny sliver of support from either Irish parliament or county councils. After the past six years of endless scandals and bad behavior, no local politician is interested in supporting McGregor.
So, McGregor hopes the support of the people themselves will be enough.
“I, Conor McGregor hereby declare my intention to seek the esteemed office of President of Ireland,” he posted on X (formerly Twitter). “The current constitutional framework however, presents a significant barrier to democratic participation. The existing regulations mandate that a candidate must secure nominations from either twenty members of the Oireachtas or four county councils to be eligible for the ballot. This system, while intended to ensure a degree of political influence among candidates, inadvertently restricts the direct voice of the Irish electorate.”
“In light of this, I propose a petition advocating for a modification of the nomination process to allow my name be included on the ballot,” he continued. “I contend that the citizens of Ireland, both at home and abroad, should have the unhindered right to determine the candidates who appear on the presidential ballot. Therefore, I implore you to join me in this endeavor by signing this petition.”
“Your support will be instrumental in championing a more inclusive and democratic electoral process, thereby empowering the people of Ireland to shape their own future.”
Since then, the petition has garnered little more than 11,000 signatures — and a lot of cynical responses on X (formerly Twitter) from locals who claimed many of the signees weren’t even Irish.
“You’re trying to change the Irish political system because you know that there is no [politicians] to give you votes,” one wrote. “Why would Ireland want a drugged up, wife cheating pr—k like you as president? Sure you’re Ireland’s shame, are you not?”
“He has started an online petition to alter our Constitution thinking a bunch of yanks signing it will bypass the referendum needed to amend Art 12.4.2,” another wrote. “Further highlighting how utterly ignorant he is when it comes to our political system. Also highlighting how filled with hubris yanks are thinking their signatures will bypass our legislation. The c-nts.”
One noted that McGregor wouldn’t even be able to enact his big ideas to change the country should he be elected president.
“The president of Ireland is a ceremonial role you side salad,” they tweetd.
McGregor was not deterred by the negative comments or lack of support. Six hours after posting the petition, he said he didn’t need it — he’d find the politicians needed to get on the ballot.
“234 members are in the Oireachtas. 174 in Dail Eireann and 60 Seanad members. I need 20,” he tweeted. “This will be 100% secured and I WILL BE ON IRELANDS PRESIDENTIAL TICKET.”
