UFC heavyweight champion Jon Jones is holding up the 265-pound division with his super important “plans” that tacked on another six months to his combat sports layoff. As a result, an extremely “bored” Tom Aspinall recently became the longest-running interim titleholder in the history of the promotion.
But what if Jones is taking a bullet for UFC?
“I’m a company guy, and there’s a lot of things that’s happening behind the scenes where my job is to sit and be still and take the punishment,” Jones told Full Send Podcast.
Could Dana White and Co. have something bigger brewing behind the scenes?
“My job with the UFC is to do what’s right for the company,” Jones continued. “I could easily just say, ‘I’m not fighting.’ My job is to chill — and that’s what I’m doing.”
Jones also admitted to being “the ultimate troll.”
“I love being the ultimate troll,” Jones said. “Right now, I’m really enjoying the fruits of my labor that I put in. [Aspinall’s] just not in a position to excite me, it’s just the truth. If I whoop his ass, it’s gonna be the next guy, a whole new fanbase that everybody believes in. I’ve done this my whole adult life. I remember ‘Rampage’ fans years ago, Rashad fans, Lyoto fans. I have literally replayed this story so many times in my life.”
Right now it seems as if “Bones” is replaying this story.
“I don’t want to say that I’m retired because fighting is in my blood,” Jones added. “Right now, I could really care less about fighting. I’ve been doing it my whole life at a very high level and when the itch comes back — and if it comes back — then I’ll do it with my whole heart. I’ll do it to the best of my abilities.”
