Bryce Mitchell vs. Jean Silva doesn’t feel like any random main card fight.
The heated Featherweight grudge match is not the main, co-main, or even co-co-main event, but that hasn’t stopped a routine 145-pound booking from growing to an epic clash of biblical proportion. From any kind of moral standpoint, Mitchell probably shouldn’t be defending Adolf Hitler on the debut episode of his podcast, but the controversy has ended up working in his favor.
Like it or not, Mitchell’s star has never been brighter heading into his UFC 314 opposite Silva. “Lord Assassin” has done his part to promote as well, bringing a globe to the presser and riling up Mitchell with his angry barks. Mitchell is drawing big cheers in interviews and receiving more attention than ever, and it seems like “Thug Nasty” has taken notice of the idea that controversy sells.
Remember how UFC used Conor McGregor’s dolly-chucking incident to promote him later on? Little has changed in seven years!
Comedian and content creator Jon-Bernard Kairouz interviewed a bunch of UFC 314 fighters, asking the athletes to pick a new nickname (a prompt inspired by Ilia Topuria). Alexander Volkanovski picked “The Chef,” whereas Paddy Pimblett took the opportunity to diss Topuria — standard stuff, really.
Mitchell, meanwhile, opted to rebrand himself “White Power,” and defended his reasoning by arguing he’s talking about “power in the Holy Spirit.”
For a man that power drilled his own scrotum, Mitchell knows what to say to rile up fight fans. Somehow, I don’t think Bruce Buffer would take too kindly to the name change, so at least for this weekend, “Thug Nasty” can be expected to ring through the arena.
