“Volk” is a bad man.
Alexander Volkanovski reclaimed his Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Featherweight title in UFC 314’s electric main event last night (Sat., April 12, 2025), becoming a two-time champion by defeating the surging Diego Lopes via unanimous decision inside Kaseya Center in Miami, Florida (watch highlights).
In the fourth round, Lopes landed a sneaky uppercut punch that grazed Volkanovski’s left eye, forcing the Australian to go into defensive mode to avoid being knocked out.
During UFC 314’s broadcast, Volkanovski told his corner his vision was gradually returning. In a post-fight interview with FOX Australia, he revealed he had completely lost sight in his left eye during that fourth round.
“Yeah, I completely lost vision in my left eye,” Volkanovski said. “It was a good shot, and I just could not see, and I was trying to get it back, and it was completely gone.
“It was slowly coming back a little bit, and at least for most of the fight, I could see a little blur, which helped,” Volkanovski added. “Because when it was nothing, I was like, ‘Oh, shit, this ain’t good,’ but the little blur helped with the distance and stuff like that.
“But, it came back toward the end,” he concluded.
Volkanovski’s vision impairment makes his win that much more remarkable, especially considering how dangerous Lopes is (like this).
Now that he’s champion again, the two-time Featherweight king wants to remain active like he once was and hopes to face undefeated Russian Movsar Evloev … mainly for one reason.
