Adios, Islam! Ilia Topuria takes over top pound-for-pound spot in official UFC 317 rankings update

Ilia Topuria is undefeated at 17-0 with 15 finishes, previously held the featherweight championship, and now wears the 155-pound strap after smashing Charles Oliveira atop the UFC 317 pay-per-view (PPV) event last weekend at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

As a result, “El Matador” was named top pound-for-pound fighter in the promotion, according to the official rankings update, sending former lightweight champion Islam Makhachev to No. 2 and reigning bantamweight titleholder Merab Dvalishvili to No. 3.

Topuria’s victory also shook up the official lightweight rankings.

Elsewhere on the charts, Joshua Van’s decision over Brandon Royval turned the flyweight division on its head. “Fearless” will move on to challenge 125-pound kingpin Alexandre Pantoja — who also received a pound-for-pound promotion — sometime later this year.

Here’s how the rankings are compiled, at least until AI takes over:

Rankings are generated by a voting panel made up of media members. The media members were asked to vote for who they feel are the top fighters in the UFC by weight-class and pound-for-pound. A fighter is only eligible to be voted on if they are in active status in the UFC. A fighter can appear in more than one weight division at a time. The champion and interim champion are considered to be in the top positions of their respective divisions and therefore are not eligible for voting by weight-class. However, the champions can be voted on for the pound-for-pound rankings.

Take a look at what the latest rankings field looks like courtesy of UFC.com. Note: (+/- = movement in rankings, T = tie, *NR = Not previously ranked).
