The 2025 Brasileiros produced a lot of exciting results, with four world champions, Diego Pato, Tainan Dalpra, Adam Wardzinski, and Janaina Maia, all winning their third major IBJJF title for the year and continuing their bid for a grand slam. Cole Abate won his first major title in the gi, while Jansen Gomes also didn’t miss a beat as he took gold in his first big event since his layoff.
While those matches produced a lot of entertainment, one result in specific caused shockwaves across the Brazilian jiu-jitsu scene. Gabi Pessanha still managed to win gold at the absolute tournament, but her legendary four-year winning streak came to an end at the 2025 IBJJF Brasileiros.
Gabi Pessanha’s legendary win streak ends at IBJJF Brasileiros
At just 24 years old, Gabi Pessanha, is already one of the most accomplished BJJ stars ever. She has won nine world championships, and took double gold in every single major IBJJF event in the last four years. In the promotion’s pro-circuit, Pessanha is also a back-to-back IBJJF Crown winner.
Pessanha has been undefeated in the last four years, but that incredible winning streak came to an end after an upset loss against longtime rival Tayane Porfirio.
During the finals of their super heavyweight division, Porfirio managed to score 4 points on Pessanha. She didn’t secure a submission, but it was enough to complete a massive and unforeseen upset over the dominant world champion.
Porfirio was a world champion in 2017 and 2018, but with Pessanha taking up just about every gold medal in recent years, this marks her first ever Brasileiros title.
Pessanha went on to win the absolute division later in the day, a tournament where she also notched a win over Porfirio. Pessanha is now 6-2 over Porfirio, including a pro win at BJJ Stars 15 a week prior.
Going 6-1 and taking home gold and silver medals from yet another major tournament is still an impressive achievement for any grappler, but Pessanha’s four year dominance just made the loss even more shocking.
BJJ stars typically remain very active and can compete several times in a weekend, making long streaks a rarity in the sport. Up until the final day of IBJJF Brasileiros, Pessanha’s recorded winning streak was at a whopping 166 bouts.
To put more context on that legendary streak, Gordon Ryan is also hailed as an all-time great for his unbeaten streak, which BJJ Heroes tracks to be at 58 matches.
Pessanha is likely to continue her dominance and remain very active, especially as she ventures more into no gi. That historic record has ended though, and will likely remain unmatched for a while.
